RUTRF CLEAN WATER PROJECTS: BRINGING HOPE CLOSER TO COMMUNITIES
Access to clean and reliable water is fundamental to human health and dignity. Yet, for many rural communities, obtaining safe water remains a daily struggle. In response to this pressing need, Raise Up The Roof Foundation (RUTRF) has undertaken borehole projects in Nigerian communities where residents previously had to travel long distances in search of water. These projects are not simply about providing water infrastructure. They are about reducing hardship, protecting health, restoring dignity, and giving families more time and opportunity to live and thrive.
Ebe, Udi, Enugu State
Before the intervention of RUTRF, residents of Ebe in Udi, Enugu State, faced serious difficulties accessing clean water. With no reliable source of potable water close to their homes, families often had to trek considerable distances to fetch water, sometimes relying on sources whose safety and cleanliness could not be guaranteed. For many women and children in particular, collecting water was a demanding part of everyday life. Valuable hours that could have been spent in school, at work, caring for families, or engaging in other productive activities were instead spent searching for this basic necessity. Recognising the urgent need, RUTRF provided a borehole for the community, bringing clean and accessible water significantly closer to the people.
When the drilling finally reached water and clean water began to flow, it brought tremendous excitement and relief to the community. What had once required long and exhausting journeys could now be obtained much closer to home. The impact has extended beyond convenience. Access to cleaner water supports better hygiene, healthier families, and improved living conditions, while children can spend more time learning and less time accompanying family members on long journeys in search of water. The project has also encouraged a stronger sense of community responsibility, with residents recognising the importance of protecting and maintaining the facility so that it can continue serving generations to come.
Ndimbara Village, Orlu, Imo State
In Ndimbara Village in Orlu, Imo State, the story was much the same. Access to clean and dependable water was a significant challenge for residents, forcing families to travel considerable distances to obtain water for drinking, cooking, washing, and other household needs. For a community already facing the everyday challenges of rural life, the burden of water collection added another layer of hardship. Every journey for water represented time, energy, and resources that could have been devoted to education, farming, work, and family life.
Through its commitment to improving the lives of underserved communities, RUTRF extended its clean-water intervention to Ndimbara Village by providing a borehole, giving residents a more accessible source of water within their community. The arrival of the borehole brought more than the relief of having water nearby. It brought a renewed sense of hope, dignity, and possibility. Families no longer have to depend to the same extent on distant water sources, while children are given greater freedom to focus on their education and other aspects of childhood. Most importantly, the project represents an investment in the health and well-being of the entire community. Reliable access to cleaner water makes it easier for families to maintain proper hygiene and reduces their dependence on potentially unsafe sources.
